When was the last time you cleaned your Keurig? If you just said never... please read on! If it’s been a while... you should also keep reading.
We recently had our Keurig stop working. The hubs was ready to go buy a new one, but if you know me, you know I am determined to fix something before spending money. Call me frugal, call me stubborn, you'd probably be right.

I began googling how to fix a Keurig and came across multiple videos. Search on youtube and you'll come up with some good ones. Make sure you clean the needles, those are important!
What I want to focus on is the basic cleaning and the flushing of the reservoir. I’m assuming you’re just fine with a little cream and sugar in your coffee and you don’t need any chemicals for added flavoring. Am I right?
Commercial cleaners have harmful chemicals in them, so cleaning any part of your Keurig with traditional cleaners isn’t the best idea.
Here's where Thieves comes in! These are the steps I suggest.
Take apart all the pieces of your machine.
Fill sink with hot water and a capful of Thieves Household Cleaner.
Let soak for about 10 minutes and then scrub, rinse, and dry.
Put the machine back together.
Fill water reservoir half way with white vinegar, 1/4 cap Thieves Cleaner, and top with water.
Run as many brew cycles as it takes to empty reservoir. OPTION: After a couple cycles, turn off your machine and let it sit with the mixture for 4 hours. This will make sure the tubes and insides really soak, descaling anything that has built up. You will get a strong vinegar smell after running the machine again, this is what you want!
After you've gone through the vinegar mixture, fill tank with just water and brew all the way through again. The goal is to make sure your coffee doesn't taste like vinegar. You may have to do this more than once.
Wipe down your machine with Thieves Cleaner to get it sparkly clean, without the chemicals!
The video to the right shows how badly it was clogged. This was after step 6, so I had to repeat it again.
Honestly, I had to do steps 5-7 about three times to get our machine running perfectly. It took me about two days to go through it all, but our Keurig is working now and I have the satisfaction that I gave it another life!
If you take away anything from this post, it's that you should really clean your Keurig more than I do! It was probably 3 years. YUCK.
