Carrier Oils vs. Essential Oils

Carrier oils are an essential part of your journey, but they're not the same as essential oils! They have different consistencies and benefits and are used in conjunction with EO's. So, which carrier oil is right for you? It most likely depends on what you're using it for!

“To touch the Earth is to have harmony with nature”

Most commonly made from vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds - carrier oils are filled with essential fatty acids and can be used for everything from cooking, cleaning, skincare, hair care, massage, aromatherapy, cosmetics, etc.

We use them to dilute essential oils because Young Living’s EO’s are extremely concentrated and certain ones may cause skin sensitivities if they are used undiluted or improperly..

Consider this when choosing the right carrier:

1. Where are you using it?

2. What is your skin type?

TAKE THE QUIZ!

Make sure your carrier oils are 100% pure, organic, raw, unrefined, and cold-pressed.

#PROTIP: Avoid Mineral Oils. These are petroleum based and may be doing more harm than good.

Here are some of the most popular carrier oils:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Avocado: Rich in vitamins A,D, & E, as well as potassium and lecithin. The absorbent oil has many skin benefits. It's extremely moisturizing and calming. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, this carrier oil can help your skin stay smooth, strong, and elastic. May want to use with another carrier oil to thin it out.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Fractionated Coconut: This is my most-used everyday carrier oil. Great for removing makeup, good for extremely dry skin, and keeps hair lustrous and smooth. Perfect for rollerball blends. It is a universal favorite, probably because most people already have and use it in the kitchen! Research shows coconut oil can benefit the skin in many ways, is high in essential fatty acids, and absorbs well. It will leave your skin feeling silky and moisturized, without being overly greasy. A little goes a long way!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Grapeseed: Balancing, toning, and smoothing. It's a go-to for blemish-prone skin. Perfect for rollerballs and face serums. It has a light and thin consistency, making it a favorite for massages. Grape Seed oil is high in linoleic acid and vitamin E, helpful for damaged skin. This is a very moisturizing and non-greasy carrier oil that has a satin-like finish. This oil DOES have an expiration date, don't use if it smells rancid.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hemp Seed: Rich in Vitamin D, Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. This oil is highly absorbable and balanced. Wonderful for aging skin and most skin types as it can moisturize without clogging pores. May hydrate and regulate the skin's oil production. It's also another good one for hair serums

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Jojoba: Technically a wax, yet looks and feels like a carrier oil. Good for babies and sensitive skin types, and a great option to use in DIY serums and moisturizers. The plant grows in southern Arizona and southern California, as well as northern Mexico. This "oil" creates a protective barrier to keep skin from losing moisture and mimics the skin’s natural sebum so the skin reacts as if your body naturally produced it. Slightly nutty aroma, is gentle, moisturizing, and absorbs quickly.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Macadamia: Excellent for aging skin and those going through menopause. Nice in face serums because it won't clog pores. With an abundant level of antioxidants, omegas and fatty acids, Macadamia softens and restores.

Olive: Olive oil is found in skincare products and has a stronger yet sweet aroma. It is also rich in oleic acid, making it a good choice for dry skin. This is a great option for DIY cleansers and homemade soaps. I don't always recommend this oil by itself because of the thickness and smell. It's good to know you can use it in a pinch!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Raspberry Seed: This oil is nourishing and conditioning. Many people like it because it's thinner, dryer, and good for sensitive skin. Contains UV-A & UV-B absorbing properties and has SPF of 28-50.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Rosehip Seed: Nourishing, great for skin smoothing. Excellent in face serums for more mature skin. Rich in Vitamin A, which is known to help fight against age spots and wrinkles. It's also packed with molecules that are small enough to penetrate deep layers of the skin, improving moisture and collagen levels.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Sweet Almond: A nourishing oil that can help balance skin tone and color. High in trace minerals, linoleic acid, & vitamins A, E, & D. This carrier oil has a slightly sweet and nutty aroma, with a thicker consistency. It is very moisturizing for the skin, hair, and nails, making it an ideal choice for your DIY lotions, hair masks, and cuticle oils. Also rich in Vitamin E.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

V-6: Young Living’s combo of antioxidant vegetable oils - almond, coconut, grape seed, olive, sesame, sunflower, & wheat germ. It's light, non-greasy, colorless, and odorless -- it can also be used on pets! It carries a long shelf-life and nourishes your skin without clogging pores. Love this carrier oil in all of my rollers and many DIY recipes. I also suggest it for night time massage, since it won’t stain your clothes or sheets!
